Rutas del Inca is one of Peru’s most compelling comeback stories. In 2020, the cooperative faced its breaking point: already struggling with insolvency after funds were stolen by previous leadership, a car accident claimed multiple members of the board. Then came Covid. For farmers, the impact was immediate—parchment payments fell behind, operations stalled, and exports dwindled to just four containers. Recovery began when members rallied alongside the Progreso Foundation to restructure. Debts were repaid, governance was reestablished, and José Rubio, a young manager from Progreso, was appointed to lead with a renewed emphasis on accountability and technical training.
Now back on their feet, their reach is significant. Its 326 members are spread across Querocoto, Huambos, Querocotillo, and Llama—remote districts where the cooperative provides the only organized option for smallholder farmers. Elevations extend from 1,900 to 2,400 meters, and the top 65 families farming the highest peaks now represent the spearpoint of specialty.
