Goro Muda Natural, Ethiopia
Goro Muda Natural, Ethiopia
Farms in the Haro Wachu Kebele are situated around 2,000-2,300 masl and connected by dirt roads that become hazardous during heavy rains. Because of this, local producers rely on horses, mules, or donkeys to transport their coffee. Rainfall patterns in the region have changed significantly. What used to be a short rainy season now lasts nearly year-round due to climate change. This makes all forms of labor more difficult, especially during the harvest season, which runs from December to February. Producers take advantage of clear weather when they can, working quickly to harvest and transport coffee before the rains return. The local washing station receives cherries from over 360 producers in the area, each of whom are are celebrated for their dedication, traditional knowledge, and exceptional coffee quality. The producers use intercropping techniques, planting false banana trees, maize, Korch, Wanza, and Sesa to provide shade for the coffee plants. Shade selection depends on the age and specific needs of the coffee trees. The area’s soil is a rich sandy loam with excellent water retention and drainage. With proper planting practices, it is self-sustaining and does not require fertilizer to produce high-quality coffee.
Origin: Guji, Ethiopia
Variety: Ethiopian Landraces
A landrace is a domesticated, locally adapted, traditional variety of a species of animal or plant that has developed over time, through adaptation to its natural and cultural environment of agriculture and pastoralism, and due to isolation from other populations of the species.
In coffee, most landrace varieties originate from the forests of Ethiopia, where C. arabica evolved, through a process of human-led domestication. They are generally associated with very high cup quality and lower yields. (WCR)
