IN THE CRISP MORNING AIR IN LATE OCTOBER 2024, 2,000 METERS UP IN THE MOUNTAINS OF SANTA MARIA, COLOMBIA, WE PULLED UP TO THE HOME OF VICTOR CHALA. HIS FRONT YARD WAS FULL OF YOUNG CHIROSO, SIDRA, AND PINK BOURBON SAPLINGS, AND A PANORAMIC VIEW OF SPRAWLING COFFEE FIELDS, PLANTED IN A PERFECT GRID. HIS PASSION FOR PRECISENESS IN THE COFFEE PROCESS
WAS ALREADY APPARENT, AND EXCITEMENT FILLED THE AIR AS WE WALKED THE GROUNDS AND SAW MORE OF HIS OPERATION. GROWING COFFEE AND PRODUCING IT AT A SPECIALTY LEVEL TAKES A SIGNIFICANT EFFORT, AND TO SEE THIS INTENTIONALITY IN PERSON WAS INSPIRING TO SAY THE LEAST.
IT’S NOT OFTEN WE GET TO OFFER A COFFEE FROM A FARM THAT WE STEPPED FOOT ONTO. WHEN WE’RE ABLE TO CONNECT ALL THE DOTS IN OUR HEADS ABOUT THE MYSTERIES OF THE COFFEE WORLD, AND PAINT A CLEAR PICTURE OF THE AMOUNT OF HARD WORK THAT GOES INTO THIS BEAUTIFUL PRACTICE, IT MAKES WHAT WE DO ON A DAILY BASIS THAT MUCH MORE MEANINGFUL. WE’RE HOPING YOU CAN TASTE THE FRUITS OF THIS NEW EXPERIENCE, AND HOP ON FOR A RIDE AS WE VENTURE FURTHER DOWN THIS EXCITING RABBIT HOLE OF RELATIONSHIP BASED COFFEE.

ORIGIN Santa Maria, Huila, Colombia
VARIETY Caturra
Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon variety. It was discovered on a plantation in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil sometime between 1915 and 1918. In Colombia, Caturra was thought to represent nearly half of the country’s production until a government-sponsored program beginning in 2008 incentivized renovation of over three billion coffee trees with the leaf-rust-resistant Castillo variety (which has Caturra parentage). Caturra led in part to the intensification of coffee cultivation through higher-density planting, often in full sun, that took place in the region in the second half of the 20th century. (WCR)

Víctor Chala has been around coffee his entire life, he remembers his parents as producers and always selling to the local cooperative. However, he bought Finca Palma Rosa 14 years ago, as a leap of faith, since he saw a future in coffee growing for the specialty market. (The Coffee Quest)
